Interview Archive
this page has links to various interviews and podcasts with DJ MacHale, along with a summary/commentary from me. this will only have interviews that feature something related to Pendragon... basically, i listen to all those AYAOTD interviews so you don't have to.
mostly dark, but some talk about Pendragon tv show starts at 53:26! basically, an update that he's still trying to get the books adapted, along with a little information about what dj wants the show to be like. he specifically mentions aging up the characters and spending more time on things like character's backstories.
pendragon talk begins at 52:24. nothing much new here, but one thing of note is dj briefly mentioning a few different ways he could hypothetically adapt it; that he would consider making it animated, and that it could be a series with hour long episodes instead of a movie series.
mostly dark stuff, but one person (u/recoveringleft) asked a couple very good questions about morpheus road, solara, and even the library, which is very important to me.
dj talks about his struggles with trying to make shows for the last few years and gives advice on writing for tv. in the way of pendragon, he mentions that he's been pitching it to streaming services as recently as 2020. (this interview is free, but only available to people with an account on couch soup.)
questions about dj's books, specifically dj once again saying that he doesn't plan to write anything more in the pendragon universe any time soon. so nothing new here.
this video has a bunch of questions from fans on instagram about pendragon, and some information that even i didn't know before, particularly that shawn mendes had shown interest in playing bobby in a hypothetical adaptation. and it's worth mentioning that i asked two questions that were answered in this interview, but neither were actually about pendragon... i asked if he was planning on writing more library books (cries) and about his favorite muppet!
around 14:40, dj talks about his outlining and writing process for both books and tv, and then mentions that he planned the entire pendragon series in about a week. i also want to highlight at 1:03:00, when he's talking about his favorite movie he mentions that his writing tends to be similar to this movie he watched as kid, in particular because it follows a group of people on an adventure but the narrative also focuses on the relationships and conflicts between the characters in the group. sounds familiar!
